CRUISING CANVAS: THE ARTISTRY OF LOWRIDING
A Contemporary Art Exhibition Celebrating Craftsmanship, Culture, and Community

SANTA ANA, CA — This November, the Orange County Center for Contemporary Art (OCCCA) presents Cruising Canvas: The Artistry of Lowriding, a month-long exhibition bringing together approximately 68 artists whose work explores the creativity, craftsmanship, and cultural narratives of lowrider artistry.
Curated by Southern California artist Valerie Vargas, the exhibition brings together artists whose creative practices have helped shape the artistic landscape of lowrider culture, while exploring how that same culture continues to inspire new forms of artistic expression. Together, their distinct perspectives and personal narratives reveal an artistic tradition that continues to evolve across generations.

A Collective Celebration of Artistry ​
Featuring emerging and established artists across generations, Cruising Canvas considers lowriding not only as an automotive tradition but also as a source of artistic innovation. Each artist contributes an individual voice to a larger conversation about craftsmanship, cultural memory, and community. Together, the works invite audiences to look closely at the people, processes, and creative traditions behind the art.

Beyond the Exhibition ​
The opening reception takes place Saturday, November 7, from 6–10 p.m., with music, live artistry, and opportunities to meet participating artists.

On Saturday, November 14, free youth workshops from 1–3 p.m. introduce participants to metal leafing, lettering fundamentals, and pinstriping through hands-on instruction by practicing artists. An artist panel at 5 p.m. will explore creative practices, personal experiences, and the evolving expressions of lowrider artistry.
A closing reception on Saturday, November 28, from 5–8 p.m. will include the debut of a commemorative publication spotlighting the artists and documenting the exhibition.

An Artist’s Perspective
For Vargas, the exhibition is both a celebration of the artistic community that shaped her practice and an opportunity to connect audiences with the craftsmanship behind lowrider culture. She hopes the exhibition and its educational programming encourage creative exchange, mentorship, and future opportunities for young artists.
