Gina Genis

ARTIST

Gina Genis grew up in Los Angeles and experimented with visual and performing arts while in elementary and high school. She moved to New York City to study fine art at Parsons The New School for Design. Since then, she has exhibited in museums and galleries across the U.S., including the Museum of Modern Art-Miami, Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Laguna Art Museum, Wignall Museum of Contemporary Art, and the Lancaster Museum of Art and History.

 

She lives in Idyllwild, CA and Washington D.C. Her work concentrates on presenting social issues prevalent in America. Recent work includes the conditions of the elderly in America, an aging society, invasion of privacy, the failure of our health care system, hoarding, and the wide- spread collapse of the economy. Her series, “Economy Portraits” executed as Artist-In- Residence at the Huntington Beach Art Center was awarded “Best Art Show of 2011 by the OC Weekly newspaper. 

She curated the critically acclaimed exhibit "Wide Angle View", featuring the assignment and personal photographs of 16 international award-winning photojournalists at the Orange County Center for Contemporary Art. She is included in the permanent collections of the Sackner Archive of Concrete and Visual Poetry, the Otto G. Richter Library, Hard Rock Casino, and IBM, John Mullen & Mike Brase Collection, and the Sarah and Adam Markman Collection among others. Her images have appeared on CNN, NBC, ABC, and other media outlets. She teaches in-the-field workshops to beginning photographers through the Gina Genis Photo Workshops as well as online courses at The Compelling Image. She is a frequent guest lecturer at universities, colleges, and museum clubs.
