Michael Masaru Flora and RM Francis

Press Release

“Flora’s microscopic panoply of highly refined electronics alternately lulls and scrambles your
neurons with an unpredictable attack similar to that of Ryoji Ikeda and some of the more
rarefied output on the Raster-Noton and Mille Plateaux labels.”

“RM Francis generates rivulets of ruptured, highly warped and pulverized tones that sound like
a 21st-century Xenakis on meth.”

- Dave Segal, The Stranger (Seattle)

Michael Masaru Flora
Michael Flora is a Minneapolis-based sound artist. His interest is in the exploration of sound via
research and artistic practice. Working within the intersections of art, science, music, and
mathematics, he creates pieces that examine sonic morphology, spatialization, and human
perception. Composition is realized through a combination of various digital synthesis methods
and processing of recorded sounds. Work is often presented in site-specific multi-channel
installations and performances which reveal the unique sonic footprint of the space and allows
for the choreography of sound through speaker placement and animation of movement.
Flora ’ s practice has included recording, performance, installation, video, choreography, and
curatorial projects. His work has been presented at Stanford University’s Center for Computer
Research in Music and Acoustics (CCRMA), St Cloud State University (Minnesota) as well as
clubs, galleries, theaters, warehouses, and universities throughout North America. His latest
recording “Xi” was published by Minnesota-based label Sympathy Limited.

RM Francis
RM Francis is an artist based in Seattle working with computer-generated sound via
recordings, installations, and performances. His work is primarily informed by historical
electroacoustic practices and posthumanist philosophy. He has presented his work at
numerous festivals in the US, including Debacle in Seattle, 2 Day in Portland, Diffusion in
Baltimore, and Human Festival in Philadelphia. His work has been released on DRAFT, Agents
of Chaos, and atrium. His 2017 release Hyperplastic Other, a multimedia work utilizing
chocolate and sound, is published by nada. Francis is also a member of Mesh Collaborative, a
computer music ensemble employing network architecture to explore novel modes of
collective authorship and human-machine interaction.

Spercial performance by Kohinoorgasm

Photot Sonia Prabhu, styling by NorBlack NorWhite

Kohinoorgasm (one word: ko-hee-noor-gasm) is the experimental pop music project of queer, desi artist Josephine Shetty. Shetty uses minimal dance beats and softly sung vocals as a gentle way to communicate her frustrations with misogyny, opposition to war and imperialism, and experiences with anxiety and abuse. By looping danceable drums and dreamy synth sounds beneath repetitive English and Hindi lyrics, Shetty creates hypnotic environments meant for introspection and catharsis. She has performed at SXSW, Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive, and several other universities, museums, music venues, and DIY spaces across the US and Europe.

Terra Sangue Mare, Sicilian Folk and Roots Music

Videoclips form our recent concert at the Biblioteca Statale di Cremona

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gu-xbN6IhU0

English:

Michela Musolino is an internationally recognized Sicilian-American singer. The grand-daughter of Sicilians immigrated to America, she has re-discovered her own cultural roots  through the study and reinterpretation of the folk songs of Sicily and Southern Italy.

Fabio Turchetti is a composer and accordionist from Cremona who travels the world with his music. Dividing his time between a repertoire of Italian folk revival and his own compositions, besides performing, Turchetti also writes books on the topic of music.

Together Musolino and Turchetti have created “Terra Sangue Mare” ( with percussionist Michael Delia) whose eponymous CD has received excellent public  feedback   and critical acclaim. It’s been included in Pop Matters’ list of The Twelve Best World Music Albums for 2016 and is played on world music radio stations around the globe.
Musolino & Turchetti will present a concert of Sicilian folk and roots music, including both traditional and contemporary songs as well as some original compositions based on the songs they recently recorded on their CD Terra Sangue Mare.
Released in 2016, the CD has been well received by the public and critics alike.
The two musicians with their instruments( voice, frame drum, guitar, organetto) will lead the audience on a fascinating voyage of  re-discovering  centuries of the musical traditions  and culture  of Sicily.

Deleyaman on tour from France, along with Joy Shannon and the Beauty Marks

Deleyaman was founded in 2000 by the american musician and multi-instrumentalist Aret Madilian.

They are the first alternative indie band to have included the ancient wind instrument called the “duduk” in their line-up and many compositions.

Deleyaman’s musical influences are vast. From post-punk to cold wave to ambient, minimalist, atmospheric and classical music, their enigmatic sound reaches far beyond the music heard in mainstream genres.

Joy Shannon and the Beauty Marks are a Celtic pagan folk band fronted by the Irish multi-instrumentalist singer Joy Shannon on Celtic harp, cello and harmonium. The Beauty Marks have released 5 studio albums: “As in the Wilderness” (2008), “The Opium Wars or Love in Lieu of Laudanum” (2009), “The Black Madonna” (2010), “Out of My Dreams and Into My Arms” (2011), and “The Oracle” (2013, Kalinkaland Records,Germany).

The Beauty Marks release their 6th studio album “Mo Anam Cara” on the Spring Equinox, March 20, 2015.

For those unaware/unsure of the Noise Genre: (its not strictly being 'loud')
http://en.wikipedia.org/ wiki/Noise_music

According to Danish noise and music theorist Torben Sangild, one single definition of noise in music is not possible. Sangild instead provides three basic definitions of noise: a musical acoustics definition, a second communicative definition based on distortion or disturbance of a communicative signal, and a third definition based in subjectivity (what is noise to one person can be meaningful to another; what was considered unpleasant sound yesterday is not today).

At first the art of music sought purity, limpidity and sweetness of sound. Then different sounds were amalgamated, care being taken, however, to caress the ear with gentle harmonies. Today music, as it becomes continually more complicated, strives to amalgamate the most dissonant, strange and harsh sounds. In this way we come ever closer to noise-sound.

Luigi Russolo The Art of Noises (1913)

David Aguilar & Taller Sur

David Aguilar: David Aguilar is one of the most versatile, creative and groundbreaking contemporary singer-songwriters to come out of Mexico’s independent scene. This playful genre-bender masterfully blends contemporary acoustic tunes with complex lyrical experimentations and catchy yet multi-layered melodies. David’s eclectic sound emerges from the intersection between Latin-American folk, Brazilian bossa, flamenco, pop, norteño, traditional Mexican songs, bolero, among others. It is this unique convergence of rhythms and the highly poetic writings in his songs that make David Aguilar one of the most promising voices of contemporary Latin American song.

Taller Sur: Taller Sur is made up of Ruby CastellanosWilly Ortega and Victor El Campos Salinas. The group starts out as an experimental workshop of singer-songwriters defusing song of authors, trova, and bohemian music in southern California. They offer a variety and fusion of distinct musical influences in interpretation and composition. Also introducing a place where you can listen to their songs, as well as songs written by other Latin composers, since December 2005
